After 30 Years as a Sarasota Memorial Nurse, Adrienne Matcham Gives Back with a Bequest
Adrienne Matcham worked as an operating room nurse at Sarasota Memorial Hospital for 30 years, and during that time she solicited funds for equipment from the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation and became a lifetime member of the Century Club—the first group of annual givers to the Healthcare Foundation. After she retired in 1994, she joined the Legacy Society program that supports the Healthcare Foundation with estate gifts.
“Sarasota Memorial has been a large part of my life, and supporting the Healthcare Foundation now and with a future legacy gift enables me to remain close to this outstanding health system,” she says. “As we know, it is the Healthcare Foundation and its outreach that allows SMH to serve the community in such an outstanding manner.”
Adrienne was born in the United Kingdom, immigrating to the U.S. with her parents. She was trained as a nurse at what is now Drexel University in Philadelphia, then joined her parents in Sarasota and worked at SMH briefly before joining the Air Force. After eight years of military service, including serving as a flight nurse, she rejoined Sarasota Memorial as an operating room nurse in 1964—the same year as the founding of the Century Club for donors who committed to at least $100 per year.
Her ongoing financial support is visible at the hospital, with plaques in memory of three family members on the walls of three patient rooms. She is a strong supporter of the Healthcare Foundation, saying that its fundraising helps the hospital stay on the leading edge of medical technology. Many supporters have made legacy gifts in the form of bequests, and Adrienne encourages others to consider doing so.
